You Thought You Had Healed It… Then It Came Back

Tonya Cox

March 24, 2026

If this feels familiar… you’re not alone. This entire conversation is something we’ve been walking through together on the podcast this month. If you’ve ever thought, “Why does this keep coming back?”… I walk through this in a deeper way there.

You thought you had healed it.

You had done the work.
You had prayed.
You had processed.
You had even felt… peaceful.

And then one conversation happened.
One moment.
One tone.
One look.

And suddenly…

It was all back.

The same feelings.
The same stories.
The same ache you thought you were done carrying.

Here’s what most people quietly think in that moment:

“Why am I back here again?”
“What is wrong with me?”
“I thought I was past this…”

So we do what we’ve always done.

We defend.
We withdraw.
We blame.
We shut down.
We question ourselves.

And underneath it all…
we begin to lose trust in ourselves again.

The Part No One Tells You

Revisiting a wound is not regression.

It’s an invitation.

Not because you failed.
Because another layer is ready.

This month, we’ve been talking about something that most of us don’t realize is quietly shaping our entire life:

The stories we tell ourselves.

Not just what happened…
but what we made it mean.

Because the truth is—
your pain is real.

And…
your interpretation of that pain becomes the story you live inside.

The Story Beneath the Pain

Maybe it sounds like:

  • “They don’t respect me.”
  • “I’m the problem.”
  • “I’m too much.”
  • “I’m not enough.”
  • “I can’t trust myself to get this right.”

And here’s the part that stings a little…

Those stories didn’t start today.

Many of them were formed years ago—
in moments where you were still becoming who you are.

Moments where:

  • you felt rejected
  • misunderstood
  • ashamed
  • unseen
  • like you got it wrong in a way that mattered

And without realizing it…

you built an identity around those moments.

You Learned Who You Were Not

There’s a reason this runs so deep.

Because at some point, you had an experience that made you believe:

“This says something about me.”

Maybe as a teenager.
Maybe in a relationship.
Maybe in a moment you still think about.

You learned who you were not…
and accidentally decided that was who you were.

And that’s where shame quietly steps in.

Not loud.
Not obvious.

Just subtle enough to whisper:

“Be careful.”
“Don’t mess this up again.”
“Don’t trust yourself too much.”

Why You Stop Trusting Yourself

This is where so many women we work with live.

They’re doing everything “right.”

They’re good.
Faithful.
Capable.
Trying.

And still…

They hesitate.

They second guess.
They overthink.
They look outside themselves for reassurance.

Because somewhere along the way…

they stopped trusting their own voice.

Radical Self-Accountability (The Part That Changes Everything)

This is where things shift.

Not through blame.
Not through shame.

Through radical self-accountability.

Which simply means:

“I am willing to look at the story I’m telling… and question if it’s actually true.”

Not what happened.
Not what they did.

The meaning you assigned to it.

Because there is always:

  • the data (what actually happened)
  • and
  • the story (what you made it mean)

And most of our pain…

lives in the story.

The Moment Everything Changes

There was a moment recently where I felt something I didn’t even want to admit.

Hate.

Not like me.
Not who I see myself to be.

So I tried to push it away.

Ignore it.
Deny it.

Until I couldn’t anymore.

And in a quiet moment…

something shifted.

Not because I forced it.
Not because I fixed it.

Because I was met with compassion.

I saw clearly:

  • how much I had given
  • how much I had loved
  • how much I had tried

And for the first time in that moment…

I didn’t judge myself.

I saw myself.

And when I did…

the emotion that felt so heavy…
simply dissolved.

This Is Where Trust Is Rebuilt

Not by getting it perfect.

Not by never reacting.

Not by never feeling triggered again.

Trust is rebuilt when you can say:

  • “I see what’s happening inside me.”
  • “I don’t have to shame it.”
  • “I can choose something different.”

You’re Not Broken… You’re Layered

Sometimes you think something is healed…

until life touches it again.

And instead of meaning:

“I’m back at the beginning…”

It actually means:

“I’m being invited deeper.”

Healing Doesn’t Remove You From Life

It changes how you show up inside it.

With:

  • more awareness
  • more compassion
  • more clarity
  • more choice

And maybe most importantly…

more trust in yourself.

So Let Me Ask You…

What story are you telling right now?

About:

  • them
  • the situation
  • yourself

And…

Is it actually true?

Or is it something you learned a long time ago…
that you’ve just been repeating?

If this spoke to you, I’d invite you to listen to the full conversation.

There’s something powerful about hearing it in real time—layer by layer.
