What Does the Fibonacci Number Have to do With My Feeling Stuck?

Today, I want to talk about patterns. Patterns are everywhere; they are a natural part of our earthly experience. In our homeschool, I often relate math to the real world, which usually involves a yearly discussion of the Fibonacci sequence followed by a scavenger hunt to find it in nature. For those not familiar, the Fibonacci sequence is a pattern where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones. Some of my favorite examples in nature include shells and sunflowers.

Doesn’t this pattern show up in our minds, too? Isn’t our present often the sum of our past and how we choose to deal with it? Let’s do some mental health math together for a moment. According to the Fibonacci sequence:

A + B = C
B + C = D
C + D = E

And so on. Let’s say the first variable is an experience (A), and the second is how we choose to interpret that experience (B). The story we tell ourselves then creates a belief (C). This belief is automatically integrated into how we interpret future “equations” because our body likes to take the path of least resistance. Our mind is like a computer: it runs on created programs until we create new ones. We have many programs running in our minds, hearts, and bodies, and our body does this as a service to lighten our mental load. However, if these patterns and programs result in stress and feelings of being trapped, it’s time to examine them. As Carl Jung, the famous psychologist, once said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

Some people feel that bringing intentionality to this pattern is too much work, and there can be resistance and anger directed at past versions and experiences of ourselves. It is crucial, when bringing awareness to patterns, to have compassion. We need to stop devaluing the past and bring dignity to it. These patterns evolved for a reason, and we were doing the best we knew how because that is how the body works. The body’s main goal is to keep us safe; sabotage is never the intent. We have many safeguards built into our anatomy as evidence of this programming.

Once we have awareness, we get to choose how to interact with this moment. We always have a choice. We may not be able to choose other people’s actions or certain circumstances, but we can look at our experience and interpretation and choose the most empowering outcome, which is the beliefs that we hold. Then our beliefs will grow larger and larger (like the Fibonacci sequence), and we can see if those beliefs result in us feeling stagnant like the shell or growing and thriving like the flower. Both serve a purpose: one provides protection, and one grows and follows the light. We can choose either, and in the choosing, we release the feeling of being stuck.

I remember once having a conversation with a client who was adamant that he had no choice. When we slowed down, it became clear that his values and beliefs in that moment were so strong that acting outside of them felt impossible. He eventually realized that he did have a choice and could align his actions with his values and beliefs with less resentment.

Being intentional about choosing new or old patterns relieves the feelings of being stuck. It is absolutely possible! It does take intentional work, and sometimes we need extra help. Be patient; most of these patterns have been developing for years. You get to choose the patterns that will continue to develop in the years to come. You have a choice every single day, what will you choose today?
