In our journey of self-discovery, we’ve explored the power of the stories we tell ourselves and the importance of honoring them while intentionally choosing new narratives. Now, let’s delve into the process of integrating these new stories into our lives so they become more natural and ingrained.
In our previous post, we discussed how our brains tend to revert back to familiar patterns, especially when faced with stress or uncertainty. However, as we continue to intentionally input the new story into our lives, it’s essential to celebrate the moments when our brains pause the old narrative and start considering the new one.
It’s crucial to recognize that success in surrendering old stories and embracing new ones isn’t about immediately transitioning to the new narrative every time. Instead, it’s about narrowing the gap between reacting from the old story and consciously choosing the new one. This awareness may come gradually, from initially not realizing we’ve reverted to old habits of thinking to eventually recognizing the old story and actively choosing the new one in the moment.
No matter where you are in this journey of awareness and intentional choice, it’s essential to give your brain a dose of dopamine – celebrate your growing awareness! Whether it’s giving yourself a high five, doing a little dance, or sharing your progress with a friend, these celebrations reinforce to your brain that you’re on the right path.
As you become more confident in recognizing and choosing the new story, the next step is what we call meta-processing – reflecting on your process. Slow down and explore how you arrived at this point. What does it feel like to sit in this new story? Engage your senses – notice the sensations in your body, the sounds around you, and the impact of this new narrative on you.
Take it a step further by writing about your experience. Reflect on what it was like to take the risk of embracing change and why it was worth it. Writing about this new experience gives it space to solidify in your mind and strengthens the neural connections associated with it.
As you continue on this journey of growing awareness, intentional choice, and intentional reinforcement, you’ll begin to reap the benefits of the new story. It will allow you to be your best self, live a life you love, and ultimately, write your own story.
Embrace the process, celebrate your progress, and keep choosing the narrative that aligns with the life you want to live.
You’ve got this.
